Counseling for Teens

We have counselors on staff who specialize in teen counseling. This time of life presents a unique combination of changes and challenges that can be difficult to navigate. Our experienced counselors can explain how this process can help your family.

Adolescence

Adolescence is the time in between… not quite adults but no longer children. Establishing an appropriate therapeutic relationship with teenagers can be complicated. In order for the counseling process to be beneficial, we must meet the teen where he or she is developmentally! Some teens are very reliant on parents and would never consider making a move without their full knowledge and consent. Other teens are extremely independent, preferring to take charge of their own therapy! We are happy to accommodate the full range!

We will involve parents in their teenager’s treatment only if it is appropriate to do so. We won’t know for sure until after we have gotten to know your teen. Here are some of the common issues we find among today’s teenagers:

Common Teenager Issues

  • Anxiety about school, grades, peer relationships
  • Pressure to perform in extracurricular activities
  • Experimentation with drugs and alcohol
  • Eating disorders and body image issues
  • Family/relationship discord
  • Identity issues and developmental stress

Parents and teens should all be aware that counselors at North Shore Counseling are mandated reporters. We are legally obligated to alert the authorities when anyone is in imminent risk of harm to self or others.
